Setting:

Thedas is the sole continent we have seen thus far in this Medieval-esque setting. A variety of races call it and its underground home. Humans are the most prominent and outnumber dwarves and elves alike. Humans naturally run the show and have a very hostile relationship with elves. The elves who have chosen not to submit to human rule have taken up wandering the woods and are called Dalish, while the city elves are holed up in walled off slums called Alienages. Finally, there are the dwarves who make their home underground in stone cities, while others migrate to the surface where they have to overcome their initial falling-into-the-sky-phobia. There is talk of other races outside of ones we see on a regular basis, such as the Qunari folk who live to the far north. But these three - the humans, elves, and dwarves - are the native bunch and by far the most common.

When the races of Thedas are not fighting with each other, they must contend with twisted, tainted versions of themselves known as darkspawn. These creatures come out of the ground to terrorize the population and spread their taint. While these incursions are often small and easily dealt with, that is not always the case. When the darkspawn find an Old God, that is a dragon slumbering deep underground, they spread their taint to it and it awakens as an archdemon and it leads them on a full scale invasion. The darkspawn swarm to the surface in a horde and slaughter many many people. This invasion is called a Blight and it is thought that only Grey Wardens - men and women from all walks of life who have submitted themselves to the darkspawn taint and survived - can end it. When the archdemon is killed, the darkspawn retreat back underground but are never truly eradicated. They breed in a very twisted manner to replenish their numbers and it is only a matter of time before they awaken a new Old God and start the cycle over again.

Time is measured in what are called 'Ages.' Each Age lasts roughly 100 years and is marked from something significant happening during that time period. For example, the Divine Age is so called because Justinia I is crowned the first ever Divine and the Chantry is made official. The Hawkes live in the latest age, called the Dragon Age, so named because of a sighting of a High Dragon, even though dragons were once thought extinct. Carver's story officially begins in 9:30 Dragon Age. While the Fifth Blight ravages his home in Ferelden, he has fled the country to the city-state of Kirkwall in the Free Marches.

One can never escape the net cast by Religion and Politics and these factions are all but married in Thedas. Most Thedosians are monotheistic and call their god the Maker. The general consensus is that the Maker has turned from the world because everyone is a douchebag. He returned only to take Andraste, a human woman, back to Heaven with Him. No one actually knows if the Maker is real or not, but there are hints in quests from Dragon Age: Origins as well as Dragon Age 2 that he is in fact very real as was Andraste. The Chantry, or church, teaches that the Maker will not return to his creation until they sing the Chant of Light in the four corners of the world. But this may be near impossible to do, since not everyone subscribes to the Chantry's beliefs. The Dalish elves have their own pantheon of gods and flat out refuse to accept the Maker. Dwarves do not worship gods at all, but they revere their ancestors who have done something to enhance dwarven society. These are called Paragons. Needless to say, the Chantry isn't pleased with this and it feels that it has the right to force people to accept the Maker if they are unwillingly to do so on their own. These are called Exalted Marches. Needless to say, the Chantry is a Very Powerful institution and carries with it a tremendous amount of influence and power. If it uses that power justly, however, is hotly debated. Most especially among mages.

In a fantasy world setting, magic is naturally expected to be the norm. The Chantry teaches that 'magic was made to serve man, never to rule over him.' No matter how you slice it, mages are a constant target. Spirits that inhabitant the dream plain called The Fade, benevolent and not, are almost always looking for a host to possess so they can enter the mortal world. These hosts are more often than not unwary mages. And once a mage is possessed by a Fade spirit, they become twisted into something called abominations. To train mages in their craft and to give them the tools they need to protect themselves against these spirits, the Circle of Magi was formed. Each Circle is headed by a First Enchanter. Even so, Circle mages are not self governed. A faction known as the templars are often assigned to a Circle tower to watch over the mages and to ensure no abominations are created or escape and also hunt down apostates, mages who live outside of the Circle. Naturally, the Chantry controls the templars.

Many mages resent their gilded cage, especially when templars abuse their position as well as the mages in their care.

Kirkwall and Thedas at large adheres to this lifestyle of subjugating mages, though it seems Kirkwall takes a more extreme approach. This is where the vast majority of Dragon Age 2's story takes place. Carver, however, doesn't spend more than a year living in Kirkwall. He becomes infected with the darkspawn taint and joins the Grey Warden order, mentioned earlier. This Order is made up of men and women of all races from all across Thedas. In order to become a Grey Warden, recruits must go through a secret ritual known as the Joining. The Joining entails collecting darkspawn blood and drinking it to become infected with the taint. Those who survive are officially inducted into Grey Warden ranks. Those that do not are buried as Grey Wardens. It is the Grey Wardens' aim to fight and defend Thedas against the darkspawn. When a Blight threatens the world, Grey Wardens rally together to fight the darkspawn and kill the archdemon. It is said that only a Grey Warden is able to kill the archdemon, as its essence will simply pass to the nearest darkspawn. Because of the taint they carry, however, when a Grey Warden slays the archdemon, its essence passes to the Warden and at the cost of their life, the archdemon is destroyed for good.

Personality:

Carver suffers from the dreaded 'middle child syndrome.' All of his life, he's been surrounded by mages - his father was a mage, his older sister is a mage, and his twin sister was a mage - and he has been the odd man out. His life has revolved around magic and keeping his sisters out of the templars' grasp. This hasn't led to the stablest of lives. So he feels ignored in favor of his sisters. Nobody asked him what he wanted to do, or what he thought was best and he resents that, like no one cares what he has to say or think. And why should they when they had Perfect Marian?

He's taken sibling rivalry to all new high and is convinced that Marian's mere existence holds him back from being everything he is meant to be. He believes he is stuck in her shadow and resents her especially because of it. But that doesn't stop him from trying to outshine her, from trying to work his way out from under her big, fat shadow. That's what prompted him to enlist in King Cailan's army. He desperately wanted to find his own way, and thought he could find glory in battling the darkspawn and the Blight. Well Ostagar was a disaster and Carver was forced to flee for his life. But it wasn't Carver who led the family out of Lothering, oh no. It was Big Sister Marian. Who died and made her leader anyway?

Ostagar was his big chance to shine and it blew up in his face. So it's only natural that he takes it out on his family when things don't go his way, but Marian seems to receive the worst of it. It's her fault he joined the army in the first place. If she didn't insist on being the 'leader' and being so perfect, Carver would never have wanted to fight the darkspawn. He would never have felt like he had something to prove. Obviously it is Hawke's fault that his life is this way. At least, that's the tune Carver's been playing for years. Nothing is ever his fault and he'll gladly pass the blame to the nearest family member.

He has got passive aggressiveness down to an art. He uses sarcasm and snide comments to complain without really complaining. He's especially snide with people he's become close to. But don't think just because he's borderline hostile with people he cares about that it gives any random stranger permission to be hostile. Quite the contrary, Carver will let you know when you're stepping on toes and when you're about three seconds away from being cold-cocked. One of their companions, Fenris, experienced this first hand. Despite whatever Carver says about his family, he loves them all very dearly and won't let anyone just step all over them.

And Carver isn't always a tit. He can be polite if he wants to be and if he feels like the situation calls for it. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen very often. He's a little clumsy around women, especially women he likes. He's a little shy, easy to fluster, and can trip over his words if he's trying to convey an interest in someone. He doesn't particularly like people seeing him that way, so if he ever tries to say otherwise, don't believe him.

After joining the Wardens, Carver was very bitter, toward Marian most of all. He blamed her a very long time. Time in the Wardens seems to have mellowed him out, however. He's finally found a purpose in his life and he's grateful for this. It's given him the chance he needs to find his own place in the world. He's not happy about the constant nightmares and the prospect of dying at a young age, but this is where Carver feels he can do the most good and he's happy to finally have that.

This has also altered his relationship with Hawke. He's finally realized that only he can live his life and he no longer holds Marian responsible for how his life has turned out. That hasn't stopped his sarcasm or joking, but he's no longer as hostile toward her and their relationship is mending nicely. He wouldn't call them friends, but he's proud to call Marian his sister and he's admitted it to her face, so he can't take it back. It's a good thing he doesn't want to.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:

Carver Hawke is about as normal as normal can get. He has absolutely no magical aptitude. He is, however, able to defy gravity by leaping about 10 feet into the air while wielding a two-handed sword that probably weighs almost as much as he does. Carver is classified as a warrior, which means he's usually at the forefront of the battle, absorbing most of the damage. He uses only two-handed swords and mauls. He's trained in all of the two-handed talents in that particular talent tree.

His specialization is in templar abilities, so he's able to disarm mages if he needs to.

Inventory:

- Lineage, a maul acquired during the Legacy DLC.

- Grey Warden armor

- An amulet called the Copper-Bladed Star.

Appearance: Carver is a Ferelden born farm boy and it shows. He's spent years working hard and lugging about a huge sword, so he's well built and physically fit. Trolling the Deep Roads has helped keep him in shape. He has dark skin and dark eyes. His hair is black and kept in dreads. His normal attire is standard Grey Warden armor.

Age: 25

OC/AU Justification
If AU, How is Your Version Different From Canon, and How Will That Come Across?

Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age II depend heavily on the choices the player makes, there are multiple ways the story can play out. Origins is the first game and sets the framework for Dragon Age II. The Warden who ended the Blight in Ferelden was a female Dalish elf who stayed in Ferelden to rebuild the Order with her lover and fellow Grey Warden, Alistair. Once the Blight ended she took up the mantle of Warden-Commander. Carver has met the Warden-Commander only once and she has since disappeared.

In Dragon Age Two, Carver's oldest sibling was a female mage named Marian. He had a twin sister, Bethany, who was crushed to death by an ogre during their escape from Lothering. Marian and Carver worked for the mercenary band, the Red Iron, during their first year in Kirkwall. And finally went into the Deep Roads where Carver caught the taint. Thankfully, Anders was with them and was able to convince the Wardens in the area to take Carver on as a recruit. He survived the Joining and has been serving under Alistair's command ever since. He later returns to Kirkwall when the Chantry explodes. His sister is supporting the Mages and she accepts him back into the party. He fights alongside her against Meredith and disappears at the same time she does.

Samples
Log Sample:

When Carver dreams, he dreams of a siren. A beautiful woman shrouded in mist, singing some haunting song. He knows the words, but comprehension escapes him. Her face is decayed, eyes hollow and ugly, but they are looking at him. Seeing him. Beckoning him. And she is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. The song she sings, it's for him. He can feel his name in the lilting notes. She knows him and she wants him. And most importantly, he wants her too.

But there is a foreign voice calling him. It is not the pretty melody, the siren's call. It is human and reality. The mists thicken and the words are garbled and he's awake now. "It's spreading. He needs to do it now."

A hand has slipped into his, another in the pit of his arm to hoist him up. Carver feels a little unsteady on his feet, sways at the sudden motion. "Say your name for me, ser."

Carver must focus to recall his name. To remember anything beyond the siren's call. "C-Carver. Carver Hawke."

The man holding him seems satisfied and guides him away from the cot. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Alistair." Carver sags in Alistair's grip and Alistair braces himself under Carver's weight. "Just hold on, Carver. It'll be over soon."

He sees his reflection in the glass of a window as they pass it by. Veins have snaked their way across his skin. His eyes are black, hollow. Seeing but not. He looks like her. Like that siren from his dream. And suddenly she is no longer beautiful. She is sinister and poisoning him from the inside out.

Those for the Joining were few in number. A man and a woman. The woman lived when she drank the blood. The man was not so fortunate. He choked and died in a heap on the floor. Carver was last and he took the sip without hesitation.

The blood burned and he thought his body had been set ablaze. He grasped his throat and coughed and collapsed in a heap on the floor.

When Carver dreams, he dreams of that siren. She is shrouded in mist and she is singing to him. Carver turns away from her. His eyes open and he is alive, a Grey Warden now. Alistair helps him up and smiles. "Welcome, Brother."

The siren's call was clear now, could hear the whispered call in the back of his skull. It was not beautiful. It was ugly. It was a death march. And Carver walks to its rhythm.

Maker's...breath...

[Is that an eye? That's an eye and he is staring intently at...something.]

What is this thing?

[He backs away from the camera and waves his fingers in front of it.]

Bet the templars would love this and I'm telling.
